nerd/nərd/Noun
1. A foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious: "one of those nerds who never asked a girl to dance". 2. An intelligent, single-minded expert in a particular technical discipline, profession or subject. I added "subject" to the second definition and I would also say that the second definition is the more classical definition of the word "nerd." I think its safe to say that everyone on the Keith and the Girl forum is in fact a Keith and the Girl nerd. Also Mike Lawrence is pretty fucking awesome. On wrestling, I'm not a fan of wrestling but I would say the overly exaggerated, bombastic nature of the acting is the appeal. For me the handful of anime that I watch and thoroughly enjoy is chock full of hyperbolic shit talking and over the top fights. I understand that as story telling goes it barely passes but for what it is, its fun and entertaining. Wrestling is just Sex in the City but with more punching. Mike: "You do have like a bullying vibe sometimes ..."
Keith: "Thank you." I was fucking rolling on the kitchen floor within five minutes of this show kicking off. I used to say there should be a TV series of Keith and Jesse living together because of their awesome banter, but I think Mike might be even better. LOVE IT! |

No way he's a nerd. He knows a bit on subjects that are considered nerdy.
But being a "Nerd" is about lacking social skills anjd being obsessed on a subject in an elitary and annoying way. Keith isnt that way at all. If knowing a bit about comic books, wrestling or movies makes one a nerd than almost every person on the planet is a nerd. |

When humans play Civilization, they play against an AI who controls all of the other civilizations. I admit I don't understand a lot about how this AI stuff works, but seems to me that half of that professor's work was already done when he taught a computer to play the game -- there is already an AI system in place when anyone plays it.

I voted no, simply because I don't equate "nerd-ism" to a knowledgeable person. Keith is a self-taught person in topics he enjoys and discuses it in a civil manner, not condescending to the person who doesn't know much about the topic. For myself, I don't see that as a nerd -- if you want to know all about what really interest you, how does it make you "nerdy"? You just want to be the best you can be, and wanting to learn, unfortunately, risks getting you labels.
I really believe it has to do with how the knowledge comes off to the other person and how you use the knowledge. In general, if you're not an asshole for knowing things and be smarmy and mean to the other person you will not get the label "nerd" in negative light. I believe that "nerd" will be use in either jest (i.e. "Haha you know so much, nerd!") or as an insult (i.e. "You didn't know that [rattle off a fact in a mean, condescending tone]" "Shut up you fucking nerd"). But this all has to relate to the experience you have with a person (i.e. Keith and the Gamestore guys = bad example, The conversation about wrestling = good example). So social skills must play a role. I think this is where we have blurred the line over the years. I say this because I have majored in Linguistics and so many terms have blurred it's hard to really pin point true definitions. This, based on the NOW and ADULTS. The past, it's different, and it depends on what experience you had in school. My version of nerds were quite different than Keith's. I'm going through the same issue with regards to the word "professionalism". It's really becoming blurred, I believe. |
