Of course you should go in and check. They could see pills beside him so they obviously got close enough to see that there wasn't blood and guts everywhere, what's to be so afraid of? What if the poor bastard just choked on a chicken wing?

Also, the story about hotels and dead bodies made me think about the KATG forum regular from back in the day who worked as a super or something and found more than one body during his daily rounds. Who the f was that? It wasn't Paste was it?

All they had to do was touch his hand to see if he'd been dead for some time. It's unmistakable, and why I knew my father was dead even while my mother was on the line with 911 and asking us if we knew CPR. The autopsy will probably give a time range of death within a several hour period so we'll know if he had been dead for some time when housekeeping showed up.
