Coming from a fellow Maritimer (born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada), what I'm coming to understand is McNally's parent's mindset is pretty much the average of middle-upper class of the Atlantic region. If it's not paying for rent, I find parents from this area will help out any way they can: be it rent money, tuition money, down to cooked food in your fridge so you don't have to worry about paying for food. Even lower income families, you're still always welcome to crash on the couch for a few days until you have your shit together.

When he was talking about his folks I can really relate to the "Holy fuck, you're not as fucked up as [insert family member name here] so, I support you in anything you do and let's keep you from becoming like [insert family member name here]". I thought it was just my family keeping shame within the family, but maybe it's more "normal" than it seems.

Regarding the "Pot Belly" discussion, It's not just fat that makes up a pot belly. The abdominal muscles are stretched due to a combination of lack of exercise and the weight of your organs and extra fat pushing on these muscles. That's why you see people who are overall not fat looking with large stomachs.

In some ways I don't think McNally's lifestyle is that bad/unusual.

I moved cross country 3 months ago. I was able to pack everything I own in 2 normal sized backpacks. I hate being tied down to anything so I don't buy anything I wouldn't mind moving into a new apartment a year later.

I used to have a lot of stuff but I moved a few years ago and never labelled any boxes. After 6 months, some of the boxes remaining unopened so I just threw them all out without even opening them. If I haven't used it in 6 months then I obviously didn't need it. The less I have the happier I seem to be.

I couldn't imagine having my mom pay for anything though.. she'd hold it over my head and I'd never hear the end of it. I only work 3 or 4 days a week but make what I guess would be considered a normal wage. I only really spend as much money per year as McNally though because I save as much as possible so I can travel (which I do quite a lot).
