It's this simple. You're right, Keith, there is no "other side" to Kony. He is an absolutely evil person who did evil shit. Stopping Kony is an excellent cause.
If today were 2006. Things have settled down now, the guy's been inactive for a long time, and the Ugandan Military, with the help of the International Criminal Court has already intercepted to drive out his "army" of less than 200 people, and dramatically stop the recruitment of children. I'm not saying just let him go. Sure, we should still be working to chase him down just to punish him for what he did, but this charity isn't going to do that. Someone had started building this campaign in 2003, the problem got solved (with no real help from them, I might add) earlier than they expected, and now it's just about recuperating their investment. Sorry, people but it's over. You missed your chance to be a hero on this one. If you really want an excuse to feel better about yourself, do some research and find a real cause to champion. Trust me, there's no shortage of them. Yeah, it's nice to see so many people coming together to support a cause. But let's not forget that most of these people are the same morons tweeting about how awesome Chris Brown did at the Oscars. It's like if someone released a viral video today about the Rwandan Genocide, asked us to donate money to help them "spread awareness" so that we can bring an end to the violence, and we all started patting ourselves on the back for being so politically aware and responsible. Yeah, spreading awareness is good sometimes, but all it did for Breast Cancer was make that bitch Susan G Komen a ton of money so she could use it to shit on women's reproductive rights and sue anyone else who dared to use their trademarked pink ribbon. I'm sorry that I can't create a slick video to explain it any simpler. I know it's tough to tell the good charities apart from the bad ones, but here's one easy litmus test that'll work for you most of the time: Good charities are usually boring. You'd do 10 times more for Ugandan children by helping them buy mosquito nets for malaria. Last edited by BadDecisionDino; 03-13-2012 at 01:50 PM. |

Does anyone feel sorry for the American soldier who shot up 16 Afghans in recent days?
I actually do...poor bastard probably just snapped and lost his shit completely. Time to pull out of that cluster fuck? |

This charity is bullshit in the way that the Komen Foundation was shown to be bullshit. The majority of their money goes to themselves. Similar to the Komen Foundation, who spends almost nothing on cancer research but will spend millions of dollars in legal fights if anyone else has the nerve to use a pink ribbon, and pay their CEO half a million dollars per year.

Hmmm...I remembering protesting on behalf of Invisible Children back in...2008, before W gave support to the Ugandan government. At that point we were doing it because while Kony was exiled in 2005-2006, he had evaded capture and has been on the run since then. He was also exerting a lot of influence to cause problems. From what I understand his forces are now down to a couple hundred, what with the 30,000 children that is being cited was the total number of children over the 30 years. Even if the immediate problem is, basically, resolved, I would say the effects of his crimes would be felt for a generation and maybe with his face plastered all over the place he'll get caught. So...maybe it's a little dissengenous, but the ultimate result can only be a good one.

Do you think there are similar situations around the world that you're not aware of? We're all interested in continuing our education. Is it sometimes a day late and a dollar short? Usually it is! That doesn't mean people shouldn't be outraged when they first hear of it. |

I don't agree, call me pessimistic, but, as I said previously, catching him isn't going to save anyone. He'll be put to justice... but then what? All these "Liberation" groups in Africa will learn their lesson? No, someone will come to take his place and might be even worse then Kony. The reason Africans join these groups are a lack of education and desperation(food water and shelter). the only way to stop this is to provide them with the knowledge to take care of themselves and not rely on these "charismatic"(for lack of a better word) warlords.

Family Closeness
As Keith was talking today about a cousin (at least I think it was a cousin) that had died it reminded me a new story in Ontario.
They found a body in 1997 and only NOW identified it at a 17 year old girl. Her family never reported her missing. They say that they weren't very close and when she moved away they never kept in touch. Now, I have distant family members... but how can you not be concerned if nobody has heard from your daughter/sister in 15 years? In the article I read the family said they thought she was a stripper or a waitress somewhere..... |
