My HS had home ec (aka cooking) classes. I, a woman, opted to not take it even though a lot of chicks (and dudes who liked to eat during school) did take it. No one learned anything from home ec except how to make chocolate chip cookies and brownies. There was no life skill happening. They were just excited to bake snacks during school hours.

I agree, there should be a "life skills" class that integrated important things you need to know, and it should tie in with how that's changed with technology. Learn how to balance a checkbook, read your online bank statement, and learn how to NOT get scammed by a Nigerian prince or potential Craigslist landlord.
