I think Keith touched upon a very good point. Not having a mattress is like not exercising. Sure, you can be happy without exercise or a bed. Some people ARE perfectly happy. That said, having something good to sleep on will make you happier. Just like exercise you may not think its important for your happiness until you do it.
In my personal experience whenever I have slept on the floor, at a friends or wherever I end up grumpy the next day. I'm not saying having a bed stops depression but in the same vain a bit of exercise won't necessarily fix weight immediately but if you don't try it you can't complain that your fat.
