I heard you mention that it was $3K to get the green card for her and I thought it was a little much. I went to the USCIS site and checked and you should only need to do two forms (I-485 for her and I-130 for you) and the fees total $1,490. I filled all the forms myself and it all went smoothly, this was in 2005. If you're paying a lawyer to get it done then obviously you pay them on top of that but it can definitely be done without their help.
