I told my husband this morning that it was such a good show. Once Calise got comfortable, I found her super likeable.
I recently had a debate with another toddler mom about discipline, and she was all about "spare the rod, spoil the child." I can't imagine hitting my child, because like Calise said it always seems to be done out of anger. The parent may think they are calm, but I've never witnessed that. I'm hormonal, impatient and 40 weeks pregnant with number two and super cunty right now, but I still can't imagine hitting our daughter, or a situation where another form of punishment wouldn't work even better than violence. Calise finally put into words something I instinctively knew, but thought was so obvious, that I never mentioned it when explaining our views on discipline. "The child has to want to spend time with you in the first place!" That is the difference between the parenting styles, I think. We like to play and learn together, and it is a punishment (for both of us!) to have to stop that and take a time out. That's why it works for us, but might not for others. It really depends on the parent/child dynamic already in place. After learning that I shouldn't put baby in the oven, this is the second most valuable piece of parenting advice I've ever gotten from KATG. Who fucking knew!

So cool hearing this episode directly after hearing the episode of Hang out with Me that Calise was on. I felt like I already "knew" her to an extent that I didn't find her to be uncomfortable or having a bitchy tone like some of the above commenters.
I loved hearing her refreshing take on parenting as well. I recommend listening to the "Hang" ep that she was on if you have not already! |
