I would have recommended the documentary "Deliverance" after hearing St Willy...

Re: police banter. I went out with a policeman once who enjoyed telling me the hilarious story of when they got called out to a house for a bad smell and found the owner "just hanging around" i.e. he had hung himself.

Then they had to call the forensics unit who took four hours to get there, so while they waited they ate the dead guy's pizza and watched his DVDs. While he was hanging there.

I didn't see him again.

I'm glad Chemda thought the Katy Perry documentary was stupid, too. Two hours of them saying what a musical genius she is, and then they cut to the concert footage and....eh? Not all that impressed with the live performances.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I think most tourists from outside the country probably don't know what to tip because American city tipping is totally different than what they're used to.

I know I didn't understand it until very recently because where I live (Canada) the minimum wage is $10-$11 an hour and I know there are no exceptions to that wage even for service industry employees. That's enough money that 2 people in one apartment can live pretty well so I know that they don't NEED tips to survive. So here tipping is honestly a reflection of how good the service is and generally doesn't exceed 15% even for the best service.

I've since learned that minimum wage in America (and more specificity NY from listening to your show) doesn't work the same way and many waiters are counting on tips to get by so I always adjust my tipping when I'm in America to account for the low or non-existent minimum wage.

I've since had to explain this to a number of friends who were also under the impression that their American waiter must be making a halfway decent wage before tips.

Why wouldn't people assume that if you're in a different country you should check out the rules?

Every country I've been in, I've asked fellow customers the tipping rules: Canada, Mexico, England, Israel...

I even look how people in other countries are eating. Do they ingest the food through their mouths also? Better safe than sorry.

Can anyone with the Internet available on every device in their pocket really claim ignorance. I think a lot of people just wave the "I don't understand how this tipping in your city/country works" flag to save themselves a few bucks on their vacation.

Or are they in such a good mood that they are more generous? If tipping in Times Square is awful it makes me think they tend to be stingy.

It took a few years, but here in the midwest we generally understand that 20% is standard now. That does not mean that everyone accepts it or does it...

I only skipped out on a check once and that was because when I walked back from the bathroom my friends had already jumped in the car and told the lady I was paying as a joke so I looked up and they came screeching up to the front door and in a panic I ran out and hopped in laughing hysterically all the way home. Teenagers are such dicks.
