Never Walked out
I have never walked out on a check, but I have walked toward the door when I waited 20 minutes for the check to come in a half full restaurant. As soon I got part way to the door, my waitress magically appeared and had plenty of time to take care of my check. I haven't had to do it again, but I would pretend to leave again if that's what it takes to get my server's attention after waiting that long for a check.

I've done that or some variation of that. I've also asked every single person that works at a place for my check.

Tipping
I have a fair number of server friends and I was shocked by their answers to this question: "Automatic 15% on all checks or leave it up to the customer?"
I assumed that based on the bitching about poor tippers, the auto 15% would be the majority answer. It was the opposite because they believed on average, they can get better than 15 with their service. I don't know exactly what to make of my highly unscientific pole, but that's what I got. Personally, I would prefer a 17.5% increase to all items built in and the owner/manager can dole out the money to the servers. I'm the customer and I don't see why I should have to do extra math. If I was blown away by the service, I'll drop extra on the table. Along these lines, I would love if stores displayed the prices of items WITH the tax already added. For me, I just like to know, but for those on a budget, they need to know, sometimes to the penny, what they're spending. |
