Apple maintains a pretty good repository of software links, there is also Fink which makes it a piece of cake to grab most linux/OSS software for use on your Mac, and then DarwinPorts, which is similiar to fink.
if you are a *nix user, fink is much like apt and darwinports is much like FreeBSD ports or gentoo portage.

As for viruses, the underlying structure of OS X is a *nix, so it is inherently safer. A windows virus/worm/trojan is able to run with an elevated permission with little to no intervention, and with most users running as Administrator (or a comparably elevated account), they are able to do things (Sony rootkit anyone?) like modify the kernel (the heart of the OS if you will) with little to no effort.

It takes significantly more intervention to accomplish the same thing on any *nix (OS X included), at the bare minimum a user must enter the root (effectively god account) password.
