I ask because I'm hearing that they did as they were trained and that they should be trained differently. Now I have no real understanding of police policy in either of those locations or other dynamics. I have skepticism when people say that there is no other way in these situations when we know other places are policing differently.

Again, not saying the police were wrong, I'm just wondering why the difference from other places.
Looks like they use a taser:

I really don't like it when people say that cops should aim at limbs or to not shoot until they're closer. It's essentially impossible for people do what Chemda wants them to do. It's impossible to consistently shoot a limb of a moving target. There's maybe ten people in the entire world who could do that. It's ridiculous to tell police to do that, 'cause there would be like a dozen cops in the entire world. It's not easy to use a gun and people who've never used a gun before don't understand that. It's not that far from saying, "Why don't you stare him down? Policemen should be trained to stop criminals with a glare."

I was trying to bait Keith into quoting his "one strike and you're dead law" but I hooked a scumhook instead. Meh... I'll take it.

at that distance if you can't hit the guy's legs you shouldn't be using a gun.

I shoot targets for competition and I can tell you that it is NOT easy to hit a moving target. Even with training and even at short range. No one can be expected to hit a specific, moving target like a hand, knee, or foot especially when under stress. Not even a cop with special training.

I really want people to understand what they're asking of a policeman when they expect them to use a disabling shot with a firearm. The movies make it look too easy and too common place.

*for the record, I use a ruger mark III pistol for short range competition firing 22LR ammunition which is very low caliber and has almost no recoil. Policemen use a higher caliber for stopping power.
