I keep wondering. Does being black, (with adopted parents who are white) make seeing/being around white folks more normalized? Racism less noticeable? Less expected?
It's nice to think that, "Well maybe if we didn't expect racism. We wouldn't be contributing to the social construct aspect of racism..." Then you see, (yet another) racially motivated murder in the news. Pretty disheartening. Last edited by Enunciated Piffle; 06-24-2015 at 07:46 AM. |

Like on the episode Katiuska was talking about feeling uncomfortable in "white dominated spaces." We have like one "black street" in our town, and then it's just white dominion as far as the eye can see. If I got nervous around white people, I'd never leave the house. |

It's just that it sounds like you're baffled by everyone else's experience. Without questioning as to why it might be that yours differs? I guess?
I dunno. The more you post about this the less I understand exactly what it is you are saying. |

At least, for what it's worth, I think we all agree on institutionalized racism. I guess I really don't articulate myself well if you think that those thoughts hadn't crossed my mind. I can admit that I dug in my heels a little deeper than usual because other people didn't seem willing to budge at all. Felt like I was this close to getting called an Uncle Tom or some shit. My point at the start was different from what it is now. Originally, I felt like the crew was placing a large part of "being black" as experiencing the struggle. As someone who didn't face much of a struggle, but still considers himself black, that bothered me and that's what I reacted to on an emotional level. Feel like I kinda got the rug pulled out from under me when everyone started insisting it wasn't about that, but maybe I just misinterpreted the original show. You absolutely did misinterpret the show.
I just figured it out! No one's calling you a traitor to your race. In another thread you wrote on, I said I knew you were talking about yourself and not a made up person. In this thread I flushed it out. BOOM! MY NAME IS KEITH!!! |
