The movie used Ice Cube's son to play Cube. This guy is no actor. He's just some guy. The son of NWA.

Eazy E wasn't married, but his GF had a son. Called Lil Easy E. Good looking dude. Capable. Looks like E. Why not put him in the movie? Why not show love to the kid of the guy who was an integral part of making NWA happen? I mean, they made it happen for Cube's kid.

The only reason the movie probably didn't take a big shit on E was that the poor bastard died of AIDs. Marketing knew they couldn't be real because it would be offensive.

I think Keith is right - the care test is the right test for a biopic:

Would I see Schindler's list if it was a made up story? Yes. I didn't really know much about or care much about Schindler. So go ahead Spielburg, if you need to make him a better human being than he actually was for the sake of good movie go for it. So art trumps accuracy.

Would I see Downfall if it was a made up story? No way. I don't care for Hitler, there I said it. But as its a real story, and true to life, its a way to experience what it was actually like in the Bunker. Now if they wanted to sauce it up by having Hitler eating live babies - I'd be out. (Probably. baby eating hitler?, yeah, yeah I'd be out)

So Goodfellas and Raging Bull - I don't know these guys, sure make shit up.

The Doors, Lawrence of Arabia, Malcolm X - stick to the truth.

Straight out of Compton:

Why would I go to see straight out of Compton? Because its about some people I care about doing things I remember and care about.

Who is this movie about? Some fictional characters who kind of look like those people, and do some things like them and have their name. I don't know them and I don't care about them. And I don't care about some fictional "rapper makes good" story.

On the other hand - everything that Dre and Ice cube has done has been lies and propaganda (they were never the ganstas they portray in their songs). So maybe by being a load of bullshit, this movie is more truthful than an accurate movie ever could be. I just blew my own mind.

I've come to expect everything that isn't specifically a literal documentary to lie. embelish and leave shit out. If they aren't interviewing people who were at the event or showing articles I know they are just selling a movie ticket, not trying to educate.

Last year's movie about Alan Turring and WW2, full of lies and rearranged events to make us feel worse for this closeted genius; the award winning movie about Richard Hawking's life, ditto. Every movie about Anne Frank, mostly lies and assumptions. Some of them have a little blurb in the beginning saying, in a coy way, that not everything is factual. Just gotta hope people don't take it for gospel

Even documentaries can and often are highly subjective. I would hope they don't invent new scenes in a "real" documentary but sometimes what you leave out of a film is important and can change the message.
