When I asked my surgeon if my tumour was benign he said "if we don't get it out its gonna kill you, I prefer the term non-cancerous".

Benign isn't that benign.

To answer what are good things that come out of this sort of experience (from my perspective):

• adventurousness - you realise time is short and get on with doing things you always wanted to
• prioritisation - you realise what is important to you, for instance fuck your job and spend time with you kids
• perspective - lose your job - so what, get in a minor accident in your car- whatevs, get your foreskin caught in your zipper - ok this really hurts
• how you feel about yourself (and others) - you have been tested and when the shit hits the fan this is who you are
• hospital fun - Red jelly, morphine ... oh the list goes on
