update on the town discussion: the people who aren't rightfully disgusted are tossing it off as a prank, calling protesters attention seekers, and we should all ignore it and go on with our lives which is the /height/ of white privilege to choose to not feel threatened; the KKK isn't coming after any of those people. lots of reminiscing when the Klan was the white knight savior of women and how it's gotten all twisted.

lol this story keeps getting more small town.

so, theory is the owner of the building, pissed at not being allowed to tear it down and build over priced gentrified lodging, b/c this place /loves/ its dilapidated historic bullshit standing well beyond use, is retaliating by putting up a KKK sign to run off any interest in refurbishing it and strong arm punish the town by putting a dent in the tourism dollars.

i don't doubt it. Roberta Green's pretty savage. people don't like her and she owns half the town. last year someone spray painted a dick on the concrete retainer wall of her new apartment complex facing the highway.

If I woke up one day and learned that some people of color just burned this whole shit to the ground on a Haitian revolution tip, like heads on stakes and everything, I'd be like "yup, seems about right".

The amount of mental fortitude it takes to remain sane and pretend like everything is alright while the entire world gaslights you is almost supernatural.

i think that might be part of the plan. arson would yield insurance money and may take out adjoining property that could be used for her new venture.

it would also discredit her opposition. hell, she could have one of her guys burn it down and blame it on the protesters. we use alternative facts here now.
