the deal breaker for Milo, it's my understanding, is he was targeting students on campus. putting up their pictures during his presentation and naming them as undesirable.

in the way it gives legitimacy to the idea to the audience and elsewhere in relevant spheres? i could make the argument it's the same. but i won't; i do not think Marcia would inflict violence on another person and i'm pretty sure even those of you who are on board with male genocide still won't harass people IRL to make that point. Milo's audience, i can't say the same.

constitutionally protected free speech protects you from gov't action, not social consequences. would i invite that guy to speak? no. do i have a right to legislate his silence? no.

There's a line. For me, the line would prevent me from going to see your "N-Word Guy" on campus. I would go see Milo if I thought I could do it without taking a brick to the noggin'...and I'd listen and disagree with 90% of what he said.

I'd definitely go see David Frum...and I'd listen and disagree with 60% of what he said.

Agreed. I'm not talking about the speakers' rights. I'm talking about what students should be inclined to hear. I want to hear from voices I don't usually hear from...even if I end up disagreeing.

nope. and we can agree on that. when we talk about the limits of free speech, that's the framework wherein we're speaking b/c we have specific rights in this country to our own voice. you are free to criticize Harvard for its choice.

But the flip side, according to your argument, is everyone just going to see only the things that they agree with because nobody can be bothered to just read for themselves and see what a just gosh-darn good guy he actually is. FUCK THAT.

At what point did I write that Milo was a good guy? I don't think he is. That would not prevent me from listening and disagreeing.
