Why the hate, I love them and my son really gets a lot out of them.
My son in autistic and sometimes when he is stressed out I can hand him a fidget spinner and he can focus on playing with it and you can see him physically relax. It's much less disruptive than him tapping on things and let me tell you this kid, he has a black belt when it comes to tapping. He puts his fingers together and is so loud. I've tried to tap as loud as he does and it hurts my fingers.

I've also given fidget spinners to my nieces and nephews, it's fun watching them spin. Who doesn't like to watch things spin?
I like to drop straw rappers on them while they spin, the rapper goes flying and he (ed. my son) giggles every time.

No, no.
I will not let the child be bullied.
I would go to the teachers, see if this helps. Talk to the bully and his parents.
And by talk I mean TALK. I can be very intimidating, luckily.
I would not let it go. But hitting the bully seems to me not ideal as it can bring me in legal trouble.

But I'm not there all the time. So it's important for the kid to be able to defend him or herself. With words and if necessary with fists.

Totally agree with Apia. Bullying is not acceptable.

I talk to my kids everyday and I've already had to nip some bullying in the bud at my son's preschool. He kept complaining about Mason and how they were enemies. Mason would hit him everyday. It didn't take much, just an email to the teacher and administrator that there would be unspecified consequences if they were not kept apart. My son reported improved results.

Kids get toughened up in soccer and t-ball practice, they don't need it while they're learning to read.

I think part of the problem back in the day is that parents didn't talk to their kids. I wonder if part of the problem in Keith's family specifically is that there were so many kids it would be much harder to keep track of everyone's problems.
