Very disturbing and I’m from WV
Born and raised most in WV ... yes I got the fuck out of there I know the Kentucky Ohio and West Virginia tri-state area very well. In these areas there are pockets of civility and reality. However the majority of the areas are backwoods in location, education, tolerance etc. The problem is the amount of time and miles between major (haha) cities. You still have to deal with rural dubaduhs.
Even in WV we knew to be careful in Kentucky. At least in WV you pretty much know what you’re getting yourself into. In WV they will happily tell you that you’re the 1st black persons around for weeks or months. I’ve even been told the klan is around and hey know I’m there. But since I was working and not staying I’m safe. I’ve only been chased in WV but I’ve been shot at in Kentucky. So fuck Kentucky. Let’s add Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and good old West Virginia to tht list too.

Kentucky
From FB: "This image is of two white idiots from my former hometown (Russell Springs, KY). They decided to go to a Halloween party (at a place called the Red Solo Cup) dressed as black people. They won first prize."

I got lucky in Kentucky
I grew up in California (Bay Area), and used to talk so much shit about Kentucky. But I went out there a couple of years ago and was surprised to find how much I loved it. I was mainly in Louisville and Berea (founded by ardent abolitionists and radical reformers), mind you -- two diverse, liberal, creative towns. Lots of gay bars in Louisville, art galleries that rival anything in San Francisco, music, bourbon, microbrews, and a lack of smug superiority (so prevalent here in the Bay Area). What I noticed, too, was that Kentucky was self-aware about its racist past and the bullshit that still exists, while here in Northern California there is still an undercurrent of unspoken racism and total lack of self-awareness among many liberal white people -- as if racism isn't a problem in this bubble.

I think Chemda hit the nail on the head when she said that New York fits her personality. Maybe Laurel has a Kentucky kind of personality.
Also, who knows what level of hell-hole he moved there from. Maybe he grew up in North Korea. |
