Chemda talked about al-anon, so I assumed those groups counted (I've done both so my vote is still valid ).

I did a CBT course and people were really reluctant to open up so I'd feel bad for the therapist and end up talking about my stuff quite often. Otherwise it would be silent and everyone would stare at her.

In my prior job I ran drug and alcohol recovery groups. We used a CBT base and did informational and process groups in an in patient facility. I am a licensed professional counselor in Missouri, but I do not practice in my current job.

That really sucks. I hope it was still a rewarding course overall, or you were able to find a better one?

I had basically the opposite group therapy experience, and definitely had a ton of luck. The mental health hospital near me offers some CBT courses for free (though the wait list is long), and at the time I had a job that would accommodate me missing a half day a week to attend. It was about 10 super nice people, and the two counsellors were very supportive and clear about the goals of the course and how it would (ideally) work. Since then I've been able to keep some of the things I learned in my back pocket for whenever my anxiety is a problem. Lately it's the depression that is an issue anyway. But hey one thing at a time; slow progress is still progress.
