Good question, yank. I mean, could they have actual *controlled* burns in areas where there are lots of houses without putting the residents at risk? Is there another way to clear out the underbrush?

As has been noted already here, it's hard to feel bad for a guy who can turn down $5mil...but hey -- Steinbrenner's an ass hole. Torre's best season was this year, after the way the team started and the injuries they had. But, a loss is a loss and it was time to move on.

Thanks...I think. I didn't know that was what it boiled down to.

There are things you can do. The most time consuming and most expensive way to do it is manual fuel removal. Actually going out, cutting down trees and removing the dead and down wood (in a forest). In places like san diego or malibu, it would be removing all the brush around a house in order to make "defensible space" <= LINK

Prescribed burns are more effective, because as mentioned above, minerals and organic material are returned to the ecosystem. When you just remove the material, that can't happen. It's also much less expensive and less intrusive than chainsaws, dump-trucks, loaders, equipment operators etc.

I think that some were, but not all. The high winds of a Santa Ana often down power lines which start fires.
