Salvia has been around for a long time. When the alternative station in Austin first started like 10-15 years ago, they advertised salvia on-air.

I have never done it, yet, but a few friends of mine enjoy it once every year or so. One of them filmed his experience, which in his mind, involved falling through the floor like a video game, trying to bring his body back into the "real" world, and then it being over. He said it lasted about 5 minutes for him.

I compare it to the first few minutes after acid really kicks in. I'll do it someday, hopefully before it is made illegal.
