Okay, going to get real fanboy-ish, so please insert the <slurp> sounds where you see fit.
On McNally's letter to Frank Miller saying that he "should have left Marv dead," you do know that Dame to Kill for does take place before The Hard Goodbye, right? |

Firstly, keep in mind that I was a teenager and I cared more about dumb shit. Secondly, for the first decade of its existence, that story wasn't called "The Hard Goodbye". It only got that label added when the movie came out. It was just "Sin City", and it was great. It was a self-contained story, and I felt like bringing Marv back cheapened that story.
I do realize that the other stories with Marv are prequels, but Frank has admitted plenty of times that he finds contemporary ways to achieve traditional comic book ends. In this case, a prequel rather than a character returning to life. Trenchcoats instead of capes. Functionally the same, but more acceptable in a hard boiled crime setting. Also, in the original Sin City, Marv was a nobody. He was not important in any way. Each time he showed up in someone else's story, he became more and more of a fixture of Sin City. Somehow, everyone knew Marv, the nobody. He became more watered down, and his story became, to me, less unique and exciting. It also seemed pandering -- the fanboys liked Marv, so let's bring him back, again and again. So yeah, I know it's a prequel. That doesn't mean I think Marv should have been in it.
