If you are to be a professional, skilled, competent interviewer the task is to get them to answer your questions and sometimes that means you have to be a little bit of a bitch to get past the ego and have them actually answer your questions. It's a job the way Keith had to serve the customers. If the customer was being a dick I'm sure Keith wouldn't throw him out or say "Hey, what's your problem?".

If anything, I think that Jian's tactics of skirting away from a conflict yet still making Billy Bob make an ass of himself while simultaneously throwing in a few little digs (near the end with the laughs and "the band minus Billy Bob who didn't bring his drumset", etc) scores him bigger points.

I think you're missing the difference between calling someone out and throwing someone out.

The point that many seem to miss here is that, as far as i know, Jian is not his own boss.

When you handle your show and you hhave to deal with the Prs on your own, you have the freedom to conduct an interview with much more freedom than when you're under a contract for a major station/magazine.

I used to be a music writer for an italian magazine and our main problem wit all the interviews was that the musician wanted to play the asshole you had to:

- be nice to him or he would complain with the PR and he would eventually complain with the editor. That meant that the editor would get your ass in the end

-You had to conduct the interview in a manner that no matter what the attitude from the occasional douychebag was, in the end his project (on which the label is investing money) is shown in a positive light

-have enough words to make the article/segment

Professional musicians usually understand that and play along. With the very good ones, you can also joke around a bit (and that's how you got the best interviews).

When you face an asshole you have to play along and be his bitch.

The few times i stepped that line it always was a major pain in the ass for me and the editor of the magazine.
