i do mini-mash. if i find out someone i know buys one of those boxes from bed, bathand beyond i'll punch them. or put a goose in their house in the middle of the night. freekin bud light drinkin' yuppies. just do it right and don't pussy foot around.
and if you get the chance make some belgian summer saison. it's a pain in the ass to make (zesting lemons, timing the 4 different "add" times, etc.) but well worth the time. and i have found that letting the beer sit in the keg for about a month really helps get them smoothed out. especially something like a "kilt lifter" or other 'regional' recipe i used to have a fridge with three to four forced carb kegs in it all the time with one or two kegs maturing. i miss those days.... now we are renting and i don't have a place for a beer fridge. thanks for the compliment grapy. i did my best work for you guys!

I started home brewing this year. I've made 3 patches (a paint by numbers pale ale, a half grain/half extract pale ale i adapted from an existing recipe, and a pumpkin ale brewed with real pumpkin). They all turned out pretty damn good. My pumpkin ale seemed to go over well at the last Team Drunk SoCal party. My next brew is going to be an apple spiced extra pale (wanted to make it in time for xmas, but the bank account did not agree), and then after that I'm going t try my first IPA.

I love homebrewing. I also use mini-mash/partial mash brewing. I make about 6 batches per year. I started out as an extract brewer, but I'll never go back to it after changing to extract.
Malt and malt extract are so expensive lately, plus, I try to avoid using extract when possible. I've started looking for either darker recipes to cover up the twang, or alternate fermentables. I'm going to try out a silly recipe for Mountain Dew beer. I also formulated a recipe for a honey ale that uses 3 lbs of honey. in the end, that recipe only requires 1 lb of DME. Anyways... can't seem to keep a train of thought going today. LOVE TO HOMEBREW!!! |
