The langage at it's core is 95% or greater the same but there are dialects and word-usage variations that can make it difficult for one person from one country to follow someone from elsewhere. Think of an Australian whose patter includes a lot of local slang speaking to a Brit with a regional accent and then have a Vally Californian translate between the two. It's the slang and the accents that lead to difficulties.

For example, Cubans use the world frijoles for beans while Dominicans, a scant few miles away refer to them as habituelas.
