I would stay in Texas because it's super hot. Also, Austin seems way cool.

So, if that's what you really want, go for it.
Do you mean you think I want to stay in Austin? No, actually, most of the time, I think I feel okay about moving. I'm super excited about the job, and I think it will be kind of nice to get a new start, and maybe have a little slower-paced life for a while. It's just that, a few times per day, I get a little panicky about it, and a voice in my head says, "Are you crazy?!?! People don't move from Austin to little podunk towns. People move from little podunk towns to Austin! What if you get stuck there?!?!? Then you'll be a country person. Blech! Stay put! Stay put!"

Well, that's not very helpful, Bob.

Cut your teeth at the awesome new job in the country. Shop at mom and pop shops for awhile (if there are any left), bank money and learn your craft.

Don't cut your teeth cause nobody likes fucked up smiles.

But I think you should make the move, it's better for your career and your future, don't worry about getting stuck, the only people who get stuck in shit-towns are people who allow themselves to get stuck...You won't, because you love Austin too much and you're just too smart to stay there past its expiration date.

Take the small town job, it might only be for a few months and if you have all your moving expenses covered, and can take a huge dent out of the debts, do it. It's not going to be forever, meanwhile keep looking in Austin and hope that the top place there will have openings for you to continue looking. Also this other position will likely boost your skills and resume so you will have that experience under you more than you have now giving you the extra edge to reapply for the first job.

Then, go for it! You'll never be as mobile as you are right now. So do it! It's time to invest in your career. Do it now. You'll be happy you did later.

Move and take the job and look for openings back in Austin whether you hate it or not. Two hours isn't so long that you can't get used to making the trip frequently if you want to stay involved in the city.

If you take the job and then leave 3-4 months later, can it hurt you in the brain-expert community? I thought job hopping like that was frowned upon.

I would think that 3-4 months would look pretty flighty. But I'd give it at least 6 months, and likely a year, before I'd even let myself start looking for the next thing. And if they had a problem with me staying for a short time, I'd just explain that I gave it a try, but small-town life wasn't for me, and that I'm not likely to up-and-leave a job in a city that I love.

I think I can do a year, though, at least. Especially because I think I'll really love the job.
