Do you believe in extra-terrestrial life?
Do you believe in extra-terrestrial life? Do you think our planet has been visited, or is still being visited by aliens and your butthole is kinda sore from probing? Do you think life is out there, we just don't see it or never will?
I was just thinking about our media culture and aliens. It's interesting that the proliferation of "the greys" seems to be a relatively new thing. Like the last 30 years. If you watch old sci-fi tv and movies, aliens are never the greys that we now commonly associate with alien life. You'd think the beginning of the idea of the greys would coincide with Roswell from the 40's. However in tv and movies the aliens we think of weren't portrayed up until about the 80's. I'm kind of curious where this change in perception of aliens came from and why the current one has stuck. Also the idea in movies in the past was that aliens were here to take over our planet. Now it feels like things are more abduction related now. Thoughts?

I dunno, the whole alien as a big bobble headed thing with a little body has been around for awhile. Definitely longer than thirty years. HG Wells wrote about grey aliens in the 19th century.
The other long standing conspiracy theory about alien life is that there are reptilian creatures masquerading as human. Either they are secretly running the world as the Illuminati, or they are clashing with the Greys over control of the planet, etc. My co-worker emails me about this crap all the time. Last year in September she was all excited because all her little online paranormal friends said that the aliens were going to "make themselves known to us" and we would see their ships in the sky. When that didn't happen I mocked her thoroughly. But she stubbornly declared that the weather patterns probably just blocked their ships from our view. This year she's all about the earthquakes....even when I show her stats from the USGS that statistically speaking we aren't suffering a greater number of them she just says that you can't trust anything that "the scientists" say, especially scientists who work for the government. Also, your poll choices are ridiculous. I refuse to pick one of those options. Obviously it's hubris to claim that we're the only life in the universe but the idea that we live in some X-Files world where aliens are routinely conducting tests on us with the government's help is just retarded.

Scientist believe that the universe is infinitely expanding, that it goes on forever. An endless number of stars with an endless number of planets means that their are an endless amount of possibilities for how planets could have developed.
By that logic there are an infinite number of planets similar to earth, at least as far as sharing the capability to support life. To not believe that millions of light years away some giant bug is crawling around on a rock somewhere in Alpha Centuri would be even crazier then the belief of little green men hidden in area 51. ========= I hope that space is more like star wars then star trek, even though the most accurate galactic civilization I have read about is probably Scott Siglers Rookie books. I think that in a Universe that is ever expanding there has to be some other life forms, whatever they are.
Sure the conspiracies are somewhat entertaining, but honestly I can't believe we are the only living things there are out there. As far as greys, meh, doubt that, but other intellegent life or just other kind of cells, sure. The theories regarding the pyramids as per your poll is interesting, true or not, the one from life from Mars came, formed Atlantis, escaped in the disaster created pyramids, stonehenge, etc, sure, it's kind of cool to read or listen about. I don't buy it totally, but I am quite open to opinions on most subjects, and I find other sides interesting. So in a nutshell, yes.

I didn't know about the HG Wells story describing greys. So that's interesting to learn. As far as my poll options, which base didn't I hit? They were here once but not now, they still visit, they exist but have never been here, or you think we are alone? |
