Maybe she didn't force him into the military any more than so many people's parents "forced" them into college. You want mom and dad to keep supporting you, you don't know what else to do, they seem really jazzed on you doing X, so you do it. That's not how it happened to me, but I knew a lot of people in college like that.

Of course, unwanted pregnancy is a bigger issue. Now if you go against your parents wishes it's not just you out on your ass, its you and your infant child. I don't think a lot of 17 year olds would have the ovarian fortitude to say "fuck you mom and dad, I'm going to live my own life." And even if they did, what 17 year old has an extra $400 or however much it costs these days lying around for the abortion?

I knew a girl who got pregnant at 19, wanted to keep the baby but was living with her mom for college. The mom felt that the baby would ruin her daughter's future and told her she'd remove her support and kick her out of the house unless she got an abortion. Of course she got the abortion.

Cases like these are usually my argument to the whole, "You don't have a right to tell a woman what to do with her body". That issue doesn't get resolved by making abortion legal. In a lot of cases a woman (especially a young one) is very easily manipulated either by family members or the father into making the choice for them.

There needs to be more scrutiny (and no, not religious scrutiny) counseling to ensure that the person having the abortion is the one making the decision and not someone else.

One of the biggest arguments for abortion is that women don't want the government to tell them what to do with their own bodies. Well you now have the other issues where you have other people manipulating you into doing what they want with the girl's body.

It's life or death. It's almost the exact same issue! He could be killed - but if it's what Mommy wants who is he to have a say in whether he lives, dies or is even happy. I'm not saying that she did force him. It may very well have been his own idea and done willingly, it was just a thought!

Parents forcing their kids into college is a different matter. It will actually be best in the long run. You may end up in a job you're not happy in but you'll be making money and possibly be able to fund yourself to do what you want to do or take advantage of your parents giving you an opportunity and get yourself a decent career!

Now, when I was 17 I borrowed money from one of my best friends and had an abortion. My parents didn't know! Abortion isn't even legal in Ireland so I also booked my own flights to England and took care of myself. It is very possible to do.

Now, I'm almot 19 with my own apartment and funding myself through college.

My parents aren't poor. They would be able to have me live at home and take care of me while I go to uni but I'm an adult, I want to look after myself and make my own decisions!

/rant.

There already is. Many if not most states now require a waiting period (24-48 hours). But these rules were not enacted for the reasons you specify. They are an attempt to reduce abortions by making them harder to get. Now you can argue that's a good thing but proper education before pregnancy even occurs and full access to medical care for pregnant women/new mothers are much better ways to reduce abortions. European countries with much more progressive attitudes about contraception and abortion and more supportive health care systems have much lower rates than we do.

I don't necessarily think it's a good thing per se, especially since the intent isn't to figure out what is in the expecting mother's best interest, but simply to instill a waiting period.
