Feminists and the Klan Moan
Okay, the opening preview for Snakes on a Plane this weekend was for Black Snake Moan. The next Samual L. Jackson channeling Shaft movie extravaganza.
The plot consists of this: Town slut Rae (Christina Ricci) gets beat up and left out on the street in front of Lazarus' (Sam Jackson) cabin. So Lazarus does what any sensible black man in a rural town does when finding a half dead white woman. He chains her up inside his house, determined to help her 'get her head right'. So here we have the imagery of a black man dominating a white woman to get the KKK's crosses burning, but that's not all!! Oh no, for what other imagery could possibly piss off the militant feminist than a man deciding to 'fix' a woman against her will? Myself, I'll be sorely disappointed if I don't have to cross at least one picket line to see this film. So I open the discussion to the rest of you: With the divergent attitudes about race that permeate this forum, how do you feel about this movie, it's character portrayals and what potential it has to advance/hurt race/gender relations in the US.

I don't think the 'feminists' will be upset. This it clearly fiction. I think that groups, (not just feminists) get pissed when stereotypes are shown as the norm. If SLJ is portrayed as an un-intelligent, Ebonic speaking, chitlin eatin', crack smoking gang member with a 12" cock, then I think there would be issues. Myself, I'll be sorely disappointed if I don't have to cross at least one picket line to see this film. If there is no protest, will you still go? So I open the discussion to the rest of you: With the divergent attitudes about race that permeate this forum, how do you feel about this movie, it's character portrayals and what potential it has to advance/hurt race/gender relations in the US. This movie will have no effect whatsoever on race and gender relations. Yes, race relations are not perfect in this country, but we as a country are pretty apathecit. We are in the middle of two wars, but when is the last time you heard anything about what is going on in Afghanistan? To think this is going to enrage the American people is a pipe dream.

Have you listened to KATG for long? Cause people get pissed about racial situations and remarks all the time. People have an amazing capacity to make asses out of themselves, especially if there's the chance they'll get some airplay.[/QUOTE]
Yes I have listened to KATG for a long time, and if you are referring to me, no I am not trying to get airtime. |

*cough* The Godfather, you shouldn't take things so personal. BTW, yes, this bit was referring to you. |
