So did anyone listen to him on WTF last week?

I used to love this guy when I was a kid.....but that's the thing. I was seven and he smashed shit with a hammer. Now I just cringe to hear the hacky shit that comes out of his mouth.

Yeah. Nice episode as usual.

I have to say though thaqt he reeked mostly of unmotivated arrogance, failed ambitions and frustrated middle age.

there's stand-up comics who spew worse shit than he did but his backing up made it worse, mostly cause marc was quite polite and accomodating. he seems to be perceiveng his own fuckup and having an ego issue.

Yeah, right from the beginning of the interview he was very aggressive saying things about how all these talentless comics have tv shows and why didn't he get the Tonight Show?

Maron didn't even get into the specifics of what he says on stage. I had to find that in this Stranger article. It was far worse than what Maron alluded to on the show. I think he was more than fair to Gallagher.

As a follow up to the Marc Maron podcast, check out Marc Maron on Adam Carolla's podcast (Which has been a thing lately, Kevin Smith on Maron, then on Carolla...anyway).

Maron is much less guarded with Carolla, but makes the point that Gallagher DID 'make it', more or less and now it's time to hang it up and go to that place where they keep Billy Crystal, rather than bitching about Letterman and Leno.

I listened yesterday, and every time he kept saying, "but people laugh at it. If they didn't laugh, I wouldn't tell the joke," or whatever he said, I wanted to scream, "HAVE YOU NO INTEGRITY, SIR?"

That is all. Off to download Maron on Carrolla now. Thanks for the tip, Thepetek.

i think that thje racist/homophobe issue in comedy has some weird and fascinating sides to it.

I was reading paul Provenza's great book "Satiristas", a series of under the skin interviews to comedians and it hit me how some famous comics are opnely aggressive about race relations or homosexuality, even more in interviews, yet that is taken as part of what they are. See for example Patrice O'Neal or Paul Mooney. they are smart and funny, but they are openly very harsh against white people, women or homosexuals...

Yet when a hack like this guy or michael richards spews shit he gets attention. Mooney himself declared in the interview that he really had no issue against Michael Richards, personally and he understood the reasons behind his outburst but decided to make public attacks on him to make a point againts "the white problem"....

its a thin line.

@Junkenstein

Mooney manages not to be so self absorbed. I think that's a lot of it. Maron...I think he was harder on himself in the preshow/post show. I don't think he was really impolite to Gallagher at all. I mean, people do know who Gallagher is, but they know him as the guy who smashes watermelons. Honestly, who remembers him having biting social commentary? He made cash back in the day and maybe should have invested more wisely?

Let's take Jake Johansson for a minute. Sorta a Gallagher contemporary, there are some (Marc Maron? Adam Carolla? Someone I listened to) would argue that Ellen Degeneres stole his nervous schtick and made much money at it, while he made...some money at it. But he takes it in stride. Knows that's the business, and hey, he's not balancing tires for a living. Maybe he throws shit at the wall sometimes, but publicly, he's doing his thing.

Some people are just dicks.
