On a side note, where are the best places to look up domains and/or buy them from? The only one I've heard of is Godaddy but I don't know if they are good or not. Anyone have a place they like better than others or are they all the same?

I got my website name from Godaddy, they seem to have the best pricing. I'm still deciding where to host it, but probably also godaddy.

But back to Rachael's issue, I kinda agree with others who say you just need to live with it. It sucks that people go around buying websites with the plan to make money, but he owns it and if you want it, you have to pay what he is selling it for.

I own a couple of websites just so no one else can have them while I get enough time and money to develop them ... others might consider that cybersquatting. If someone wanted to buy one, I'd most likely say no, even though it might appear I'm not using the address.

As far as purchasing the domain; any host you choose to will also let you purchase your domain. Godaddy offers many more savings opportunities and management tools. However, transferring from godaddy to your host can be a pain. And also, what type of management do you really need? You buy the domain and assign it to your host. You'll get reminders to update and renew. Godaddy's management tools are really just upsells. Plus and minus..

I agree. I don't think I'm entitled to the site I just wanted to see if there was a way I could get the .com and make it easier for my clients. I was thrown by the $5,000 and maybe the guy will eventually use the site (but if it's for a business hopefully I'll be more established then and I can sue his ass for copyright infringement )

All of the suggestions have been so helpful! You guys are amazing!

So what will you do? Will you use a .net or .biz or will you try and get a similar site with hyphens or whatever? Or will you counter offer?

I bought the .net, .biz, and .info and I'm just going to use those (linking to 1 site) while I start up. Then come december I'll try to put a bid in or I'll just let it be, it all depends how business is and if I think I really need the .com for the business.
