Mandatory Voting

Obama: Maybe it's time for mandatory voting - CNN.com

This is interesting in theory. I had no idea other countries had this.

"Other countries have mandatory voting," Obama said Wednesday in Cleveland

At least 26 countries have compulsory voting... Failure to vote is punishable by a fine in countries such as Australia and Belgium; if you fail to pay your fine in Belgium, you could go to prison.

Would love to hear Keith's, (and some KATG Aussies) take on this.

I used to think mandatory voting sucked.

Then I lived in the US for a while and saw the mess that happens when a small percentage of the population votes. The extreme left & rightare the only ones who vote, so the parties pander to them; which led me to believe that mandatory voting was a good idea.

With mandatory voting, people who hate the major parties still have to vote, so we get to elect weird little fringe parties (like the motoring enthusiasts party - no joke) who win one seat and then band together to have enough seats to hold the balance of power, and then proceed to hamstring the elected major party and fuck the country squarely in the anus.

So in conclusion, elections are bullshit. The only effective government is a dictatorship.

Vote. Don't vote. Either way, we're all fucked.

Seven kids killed in Brooklyn house fire: officials - NY Daily News

Can't turn a hot plate off on the Sabbath so all the kids died. I'm sure god's okay with that.

The father was praying in synagogue while his family slowly burned to death due to religious beliefs.

God hears every prayer. So I have to assume the father failed to pray for the safety of his family. A valuable lessoned may have been learned here. Or not.

My daughter asks me about God. I told her about the Christian Scientists who let their children die of a fever. Faith dictates that either God heals 'em or he doesn't. Medicine is somehow the Devil.

I'll be sure and show her this article as well. I want her informed as certain people in my family send religious books, talk about religion in every long distance phone call, and, (a recent favorite) pictures of her cousin, (of same age) at Bible study.

See how happy Riley is? Don't you want to be like cousin Riley??? christ

Vin Diesel: Furious 7 will 'win best picture' at Oscars 2016

"Furious 7, the movie that is effectively a memorial to actor Paul Walker, will win best picture at next year's Oscars, according to the film's star and producer Vin Diesel.

Diesel confidently told Variety the latest release in The Fast and the Furious franchise would be "the biggest movie in history" and was a dead cert for the top award in 2016.

"This will win best picture," he said. "There is nothing that will ever come close to the power of this thing."

He went on to suggest the Oscars would no longer be relevant if Furious 7 was overlooked by the Academy.

Walker was killed in a car accident in 2013, while the movie was still being shot. A substantial re-write and the addition of digital effects and stand-ins allowed Walker's role to be kept in the film after his death.

Furious 7, slated for release in Australia on April 2, is generally reckoned to be part of the most successful action-movie franchise of all time.

It had its official opening at SXSW earlier in March, where it received a warm response from audiences.

On the review aggregation site, Rotten Tomatoes, early reviews of the film were 88 per cent positive.
