That's cool. I actually live in Brooklyn as well. Like everyone said, each neighborhood has its own culture. So you should definitely stay here a couple weeks to figure out where you feel comfortable. Every neighborhood is basically safe and welcoming but, like all social interactions, its easiest to make friends with people who are most like you.

I'd recco anywhere in the 11238 zip code. That can be from down in Clinton Hill to up where I am in Prospect Heights. It takes you from the more college age crowd down near Pratt to a mix of young professionals and families and every combo in between.
The Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy Border anything before Nostrand is safe and even though you rely on the G train, not as bad as G train folklore would have you believe. If you don't mind a longer train ride into Manhattan (if you even need to regularly get to Manhattan) South Slope and Kensington are nice and have big old pre-war (High Ceilings, Moulding work etc) buildings. Honestly Williamsburg proper s lovely to hang out in, but I'd never live there. I'm too old for Bushwick and don't get tricked into thinking Sheepsead Bay can be workable because the rent is so much cheaper. There is an emotional toll that cannot be recouped.

yeah, i actually lived in kensington, don't know why i forgot that area... that and windsor terrace on the south/southeast side of prospect park also are decent places to live with either F or Q train access.
when i moved back to brooklyn in '05, i remember the G train having the moniker of "rape train". apparently there was a few incidents back then, but haven't heard anything like that since i've been back. |

thanks for all the information guys. I"m starting to get a good idea of where to look and definitely where not to look (Brownsville, East New York). Hopefully I can scrap up some extra cash and take a trip to look around in person.
