Korean movies by the same director: watch A Bittersweet Life (slick neo-noir), A Tale of Two Sisters (intricate horror, pay attention) and The Quiet Family (hotel family comedy I, uh, guess). In general Park Chan-wook's Vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mister Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) is brutal, powerful and beautifully shot and they're all completely different, linked by the vengeance theme. He's one of my favourite film makers and Choi Min-sik one of my favourite actors. Failan tore me to pieces emotionally, I saw it in a tiny cinema and everyone was crying. No trailer due to spoilers, sorry. Memories of Murder and The Host are interesting, different takes on the serial killer film and monster film respectively by the same director. They're an odd mix of sad, funny and political but it works. That's all, off the top of my head, I'll take a look at the dvd racks in a while.

Oh, add Save the Green Planet to that list. Honestly, it's extremely hard to tell you what it's about but it's excellent in it's own entirely odd way. No showing you a trailer, just roll the dice. Last edited by standardman; 05-30-2008 at 06:19 PM. |

Freaks And Geeks, Seth Rogen and Kevin Smith movies, all aces!
And yes that korean flick looks fucking awesome. Asian cinema seems pretty cool, so just like Mcnally I'll have to get in touch with that. |

OH SHIT, KOREAN FILM DUMP!
Click names for trailers. This and the previous stuff serve as a good primer to the New Wave of South Korean cinema, enjoy!: Joint Security Area (JSA) Park Chan-wook again. This one is set on the DMZ separating north and South Korea. An incident takes place and a neutral investigator...investigates. There's a strange sweetness to this film and, along with Shiri (which is really just a action blockbuster but nonetheless important to the South Korean film industry), it set off the South Korean new wave which put us up to our armpits in awesome. It also introduced me to Park Chan-wook's eye for interesting visuals. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and...Spring A cyclical narrative presents a floating refuge on a mountain lake where a monk brings up a boy. It's contemplative and very beautifully shot, interrupted by starling actions. Kim Ki-Duk's films aren't for everyone but I really enjoy them. If you like this, try... 3-Iron A man invades homes while the owners are gone, he lives there, wearing their clothes and even fixing appliances. The film grows from there, almost without any dialogue and it's one of my favourites. My Sassy Girl A romantic comedy...no wait! Come back! It's really funny, sweet and odd with lots of style. It was a massive success in east Asia in 2001. The ass remake will star Elisha Cuthbert and should be avoided. Brotherhood HUGE war epic. It's very much an action melodrama and enjoyable as that. Has a great (Korean) cameo in it which I won't spoil. Nowhere to Hide This film is absolutely, unflinchingly, about style - there's more invention in the first fifteen minutes than in most movies' entire running time. Someone clearly pinched from the finale for a big film we've probably all seen. Chihwaseon This is a biopic of the 19th century painter and features a great performance from Choi Min-sik (spot a theme forming?) Attack the Gas Station! This became something of a sensation with the youth of South Korea. Four JDs trash and rob a gas station then, out of boredom they return the following night only to learn that the manager has given all the money to his wife to take to the bank. Frustrated, they decide to hold the employees hostage and run the gas station themselves and everything gets more absurd from there. It's often juvenile but fun and oozes off-kilter style and great production values. Crying Fist Yeah I know. Name aside, this is a boxing film with a twist. Rather than seeing one fighter build up from nothing to fight ala Rocky we see two fighters build up to a fight with each other. The director (whose name escapes me, he went on to do City of Violence) has a nice line in well-made action films. Also, Choi Min-sik. The other actor, Seung-wan Ryoo, has a small part on the above mentioned Sympathy for Mister Vengence but you'll be hard pressed to recognise him. Welcome to Dongmakgol A war film incomparable to any other. A group of soldiers end up in a small, isolated village, completely unfamilair with war. It's sweet, brutal, funny and surreal; often in the same scene. Kang Hye-jeong (also in Oldboy) is cute as a button. Last edited by standardman; 05-30-2008 at 08:39 PM. |
