Name that Jew
I was with the folks at the capitol building yesterday because we have an extended family member visiting from Panama. Anyway, there was some sort of school group taking the tour and my mother leaned over to me and said, "That's so funny! That Amish guy has a cell phone!" I had to then explain to her that the people were wearing yarmulkes (sp?), which made them Jews, not Amish. The men had really long beards and black suits, so I think that's what confused her. Anyway, clearly Wisconsin is a very white place to live. She also commented on the many questions he asked the tour guide about how much money the senators and reps make. I said, "Well, you know that stereotype." She didn't get it. That's when I realized that I now think in terms of KATG.

Yes, you spelled "yarmulkes" right. +1 for Blitzgal.
How has she lived so long without knowing that the "beanie" goes on the Jew, and the "Little House on the Prairie" outfit goes on the Amish? That's just beautiful. And Wisconsin has the 4th largest Amish population in the country. Wait, I know what the problem is... ignorance is bliss. Your mom's just trying to be happy. Yes, she means well. It just reminded me that there are a lot of people in Wisconsin who aren't exposed to very many different cultures. My stepfather is from Panama, so she's a step ahead of most country bumpkins in this area. |

There are Reformed Amish; they drive cars, use electric etc. Ohio has the largest Amish population and I sometimes see them [Reformed Amish] in unexpected places like a theme park for example. What I don't get however, is if they can be more modernized, why do they still wear the goofy outfit.
