This isn't about money at all. If you read through the staments of Osama and many of the people who subscribe to the al Quada philosopy, never is money mentioned. It is about their desire to 'beat back' what they feel is the new 'Crusades' and their desire to establish of 'caliphate' (single islamic state) comprising the middle east, north africa, spain, asia and some of the 'stans. Around 200 B.C, this was the area that was controlled by Islam, and they want it back.

I'm suggesting that the reason they want it back is to gain power and wealth and that essentially their hatred of the West is based on a "you have something I want" mentality.

I would disagree. Money comes from technology, productivity and investment-none of which were present in the great Taliban experiment in Afghanistan. In the 70's countries such as Iran had women teachers, integrated schools (not all) and some rights for women. Now, none of that exists. It is almost like they want to return to the soil, like Pol Pot envisioned- and we all know what a nice guy he was. . .

I think we are doing a very good job around the world working with countries that wanted nothing to do with us a few years back, (Libya, and some of the east african countries), but the Israeli's are using the kidnappings as justification for cleaning out the militants. For several years (after Syria killed the Lebanese president) Hezbollah (sorry about the spelling Cubby) has been placing munitions and snipers very close to the border, while keeping a somewhat peaceful co-existance with the large numbers of Christians, many whom have a don't ask, don't tell philosophy. The Israeli's are not going ape-shit, but are 'cleaning out' a buffer zone between the border and the hezbollah Katusha rockets.

this pigs blood and bullets thing is really old and can be found on snopes.com. violating religious taboos wont get us anywhere. if they think we will kill them and send them to hell they will somehow be even more determined to blow themselves up before we get to them. instead of walking into markets strapped with bombs they will catapault themselves.

Many years ago, before most people knew al Quada existed, I did read a story about what the spainards did in the 1500's when they reclaimed spain from the Muslims. The version back then was that they killed the Muslims along with several pigs, and filled their bodies with pig entrails, and instead of burying them immediately facing Mecca, they placed their heads facing south, and left the bodies out in the sun to rot. Apparently, the tradition of a quick burial goes back to the days when keeping a body around in the hot sun smelled bad and spread disease.
