I felt that, like Blade Runner, Prometheus put forward ideas for us to ponder long after the end credits had rolled. There was alot within the film that was left open to interpretation and I don't count that as a bad thing at all. If anything, Prometheus has prompted me to read wider - particularly the legend of Prometheus, Paradise Lost, the debate over creationism. The film has bugged the shit out of me ever since I saw it - in a good way - and I've been following a lot of discussion about it.
Prometheus is not without it's flaws - for sure. There were parts of the film that were cringeingly obvious and could have been handled with more subtlety (David spiking Holloway's drink, for example). There were a couple of characters who were redundant and their motivations were poorly defined. The deconstruction of some of those characters - on the surface - seemed wrong but, in the past few days, I caught a review online in which they discussed the ill-fated Franklin Expedition of the North West passage. The reviewers contrasted that expedition and how it all went to shit because they were unprepared for the challenges they faced with Prometheus' crew. The circumstances they found themselves and how they as individuals reacted to it seem totally plausible. It doesn't matter if you're a rocket scientist with an insanely high IQ - people have their shatter points, after which they become blithering messes. And they will run in a straight line to avoid a gazillion tonne piece of machinery crashing down on them - it's called Panic. People get shitty because they want answers all neatly wrapped up in a package by the end. They don't want to think. Science fiction - good science fiction - is supposed to be thought provoking, discussion provoking. Prometheus is good science fiction. I'll see it again. |

This is the opposite of Blade Runner, Alien and other good science fiction. This is grade 9 English analysis wrapped in pretentious wanking. I thought it was just crap until I read some essays on it and comments from Scot himself. Now I REALLY hate it.

Grade 9 English? Scott's comments?
C'mon Preston - elaborate will ya? The original Alien was a basic slasher film with a sci-fi bent. This film can't really be compared to Alien beyond the setting in the same universe. Last edited by Dean from Australia; 06-12-2012 at 06:45 PM. |

The movie was kind of shitty. It wasn't about any open ended questions, or anything to ponder; it was that it had as much plot as a slasher film. There wasn't a single character in the story that made me care if they lived or died. Nobody was likable or interesting.
Also, the alien at the end looked more fake than the ones from the 80's. |

It's a sexy motherfucker of a movie but it's dumb as a brick.
I mean, the writing is half-assed at best but most of it looks really good and the sound design is off the hizook. I still had fun with it in that silly-but-classic "Don't go down into the basement alone you idiot, ring the fucking cops!" horror movie style but it could have been an order of magnitude better if they'd just hired someone to write a good script. |
