Goldwave! Wow...that takes me BACK!
When I make my occasional podcasts (usually private ones) I just use whatever I have lying around, since I have all the equipment already it's kinda easy.
I record in Logic, adding compression and limiting is a piece of piss in that, then edit and encode in Audition 2.
It's probably overkill, but it does the trick.

I've been slowly testing out different applications. Here are my lame notes. I don't know what the hell I was talking about already, but the first word in each line is an application name so hope this helps somebody find something they never heard of before.

propaganda makepropaganda.com editing and mixing
audacity multitrack
soundforge multitrack
cakewalk audio pro
sony acid
mixcast live onepass podcast

The Tascam US-122 is a good audio interface. It usually retails for $200.00 new, and you can find used ones on eBay for less. You can connect two microphones or instruments, and the US-122 has mic preamps and phantom power built-in. I'm using a Tascam Multimix-8 Firewire interface now, and it's pretty cool. But the Multimix might be more than you need.

That is Keith's new mic, the Heil PR-40. It is an end-fire mic. He has it set up correctly.
