Security advice

I learned yesterday that there have been a number of break-ins at my apartment complex. They kick open the door and tie up anyone they find and take their stuff. All my door has is a deadbolt, which isn't much. I need to add something to at least buy me a little more time to call 911. and it needs to be something that is at the bottom of the door where I can get to it when I'm out of my chair. I don't think a chain will do much good. Any suggestions?

I would re-watch Home Alone and see what he did, although he didn't really keep them out.

They have doorstops specifically meant for this...

how badass would it be though if you just got a shotgun and rigged it into your chair so that you could shoot them by stepping on a foot trigger? Huh? That would be tsraight outta a quentin Tarantino movie...

There have already been several links to doorstop devices, so I won't post another, but I think that is the way to go as well. I would also install a simple contact alarm that screeches when the door is opened without deactivating it first. You can install it low on the door if you like. Noise is not a friend to criminals and even if it doesn't stop them, it should bring you help faster.

If you want to see if you can rig a defensive firearm of some kind, I would try to get in touch with Eric Shelton. He's in your area and does instruction of this kind.
