Considering the number of break-ins your building has had, you have a case to your landlord to make him add another lock or two to your door. If it's a known danger, your landlord has a legal responsibility to provide you with safe dwellings. If he does not add another lock or two at his expense, get something in writing that says you can add the locks yourself without consequence to you.

What exactly do you mean by "kicking down doors"? Are they knocking then as soon as someone opens the door they force their way in? Or are they just going to a random apartment and break the door down to get inside?

If they're doing the first thing then just get a peephole and be wary of who knocks at your door.

If it's the second thing then a doorstop is a good idea.

So, no armed robbery yet, but I did have to call 911 tonight. Some random guy came to my door trying to get in. I heard him fucking with the lock. I yelled that I was calling the cops, he responded "C'mon man, I gotta get my dick on"...Sounded really drunk. I heard him saying to someone else "he said cops". I don't know if that person was there with him or on the phone or what. When the cops came they found a key in the door. It didn't work for my lock but wtf?
It freaked me out.
