I think it's the false superiority that causes people to dislike vegetarians. If you're acting disgusted because someone is eating a piece of turkey that's just ridiculous. That's like acting disgusted because someone is a Muslim. It is a belief system either way; learn to accept it. I have no problem with the precepts of either vegetarianism or veganism. I have problems with vegetarians for being "snotty little fucks."

On a related note, I know more vegans than most people do (three). None of them are snotty fucks. None of them act like a dick when I eat meat. All of them are polite and respect my views as I respect theirs. And don't use the, "but vegans are dumb!" argument. I'd rather be 5 points lower on the IQ scale than be a douchebag.

In general I think that those are most serious (as opposed to showy) about any of their beliefs are the those that you would never have guessed. In other words they don't make it a point to advertise their Christianity, Veganism or Animal rights activism. Those most worthy of respect for their beliefs are those that bring up the precepts which they hold only in practical situations. e.g. if someone is physically abusing a dog, then you voice your opinion or take action against it. This applicable concern sets a good example without throwing it in the unsuspecting faces of those around you. On the flipside, I feel those who find it necessary to be "snotty little fucks" about their beliefs are those who aren't quite sure they believe what they are spouting in the first place; compensation for their insecurity.

For the record, I'm not a snotty douchebag about being a vegetarian... most of my friends forget that I'm a vegetarian... I never talk about it... I never give anyone shit for eating meat... and I get harassed CONSTANTLY for it.
I've been a vegetarian for over a decade now and I still have to remind family members that I don't eat meat.

in my experience meat eaters are usually the douchebags.. trying to gross me out (and failing) or asking sarcastically how i can bear to eat plants cuz they're living things too... oh how hilarious!
..and i just turn the other cheek
and then the few loud mouth bitch vegetarians make everybody think we're all obnoxious.
