The guy who wrote the book did the movie but because it was a low budget indie film they forced his hand to remove a lot of the darker child molesting metaphors that were originally in the book. Most viewers mistake this very important line in the film.

Oskar: Will you by my girlfriend
Eli: But im not a girl.

In the book it is more clearly spelled out that Eli was a boy that was molested and mutilated. Remember in the movie that weird shot of her(his) crotch when putting on Oskar's moms dress?
WHOA!

Havent read the book, but i thought the shot was meant to show Eli to be an asexual creature, with a feminine appearance but no distinctive gender.

That's even darker though!

I also thought that Eli and Oskar relationship had a lot of repressed sexuality in it... If the book confirms my feelings then i'm not a dirty perv after all (well not in this instance).

I wont do the usual haterade on remakes (there are few exceptions) but i doubt this could work.

"Inception". Hated it. No, wait. I loved it.

All kidding aside, it totally delivers the goods. Maybe it's not The Best Movie Ever but it's certainly the best summer blockbuster in many, many years

If you dig deeper into this thread, Im very VERY guilty of this. I will be happy to eat crow if in fact they prove me wrong. But I feel kind of guilty for being a typical indie film snob that ignorantly turns his nose up at a remake without doing any actual research.

A great case and point being "Funny Games" althought that was a rare case consider Heneke did the remake himself with a near identical shooting script.

I kinda refused to watch the funny games remake for a bunch of reasons....

First, the original was unique but NOT a movie i like to re-watch. Second, using a bunch of common faces made the original strong, i dont know how strongly it could work with Tim Roth and Michael Pitt (especially the latter with that fruitier DiCaprio face).

Also, i have a major crush on Naomi Watts. Seeing her in those scene would just make me sick.

I tend to enjoy remakes that actually take only the main idea on the original and do their own take on the story.

John Carpenter's The Thing is a remake and also one of my all time favourite movies. The Departed is a remake, the original is cool but a whole different creature. But that's about it.

Would you recommend watching the original "Funny Games" if you only saw the remake?

Its a fair to think they picked hollywood looking people... because they are. But they do make a noticeable effort to make them not look Hollywood. Naomi wheres almost no make up and wears a sun dress that looks very worn and homey. If you could masturbate to this movie, you need more therapy than Doctorsleep.

The original is on the Instant quee and I been thinking about checking it out.

I saw Edge of Darkness w/ Mel Gibson before his most recent crazy rant. But it was really fucking good. It didn't have enough footage of the daughter though who's way hot.

I havent seen the remake. I had issues with it since the actors in the original are famous in germany and austria but look ordinary. The mother is aged and unattractive (and the whole undressing scene is even worse for that since the two make degrading comments on her aged body). The father is Ulrich Muhe who looks like the most unassuming middle class man on earth.

And the two killers are as inoffensive as you can be. One is a fat nerd and the other is a good looking, smiley fuck that every father would love to see with his daughter.

They look like the most insignificant bunch of nobodies ever and that make sit worse.

Tim Roth acting like a worn out victim strikes me as quite silly.

I've been told that for the rest they're identical. Apparently Michael Pitt overacts a lot in the remake where the guy in the original is mostly doing a lot of deadpan delivery and winking.

Check it out for clarity.

As a follow-up to my posts yesterday, I did sit down and watch Timecrimes:

Having watched them back to back, I think Triangle was better. I have a feeling I'll rewatch both pretty soon and see them in a whole new light.

I decided to watch the Bond series, because the only Bond movies I've seen are the ones that came out while I was younger (aka the Pierce Brosnan ones) and I only vaguely remember any of those...I loved them, I know that, but I was a kid so that doesn't mean much now.

I watched Dr. No last night...it was decent. 3/5. Nothing was particularly interesting about it, but it kept my attention decently throughout the film...no real epic scenes or anything though, and even the villain was kind of meh...

I started watching From Russia With Love, but fell asleep because I was dead tired...I'll be finishing it today and possible the 3rd movie as well.

Do you count the new ones as bond movies?

Casino Royale was, Quantum wasnt. And sucked as a movie too.
