if you know what you want and it is fairly easy (just scissors and buzzers) go to either a barber or somewhere cheap. i have a place by me that is $7 ($10 with tip) because the people there are straight out of beauty school or where ever they come from and need cash but still have training. if you want someone to pick something out and do it for you without you offering input go somewhere that might be more expensive but they are qualified and good at what they do. an old barber will give you a hair cut either 1. for someone in their 50's or 2. a fade. they more upscale places will give you something that will probably look good but will require some upkeep and work to keep it looking how they did it (gels, constant trims, styling before you leave the house). OR put a pic of you up here and let us figure out something for you.

as for clothes, just avoid ed hardy, affliction and wal-mart type stores (target, k-mart) and you'll be fine.

I go to an old time barber. Dude's been cutting hair for 50 years.

Hot shave, massage, and all. Down the street from where I work.

I used to do those quick-cut places and years ago this downtown place, Astor Place Haircuts (or whatever it's called) - back in the 80s with New Wave Haircuts and all.

Am thinking of checking this place out once my barber retires (which could be any day now) or when I'm in the neighborhood.

The thought of getting a straight blade shave gives me the creeps. I feel like it would be way too easy for the barber to just slit my throat, even though I've read that when done properly it's really safe (and gives a really nice shave).

the dominicans who i used to get my hair cut by (when i would get a caesar) would use a straight razor to do the hair line and sideburns. it is a really nice close shave

Nope. I fucking hate Johnny Depp. I just don't like the idea of a huge thin blade of steel on my neck held by a stranger.

one of my friends grew a beard for over 4 years, but had to cut it for his wedding of course. so he got a straight shave at a fancy old school place, where his research showed was the best in the area. he said it was an awesome experience that every guy should try at least once.
