The RIM thing was a patent holding company called NTP said that decades ago, they patented the idea and a rough method of sending messages from one wireless device to another. They claimed that RIM infringed on their patent and sued them.

At one point, the judge was pissed at both sides because they were acting like two cats trying to hump each other. Lots of hissing and scratching while trying to not expose their asses...

One case was settled and RIM paid NTP a butt-load of cash and in the second the judge is looking at the validity of NTP's patents in general.
