I absolutely saw it coming with the ex father in law.
He loves to be a rebell and to provoke people over all. In his youth smoking weed did the trick. Now weed is legal.
Now being pro Trump gives him the biggest reaction.
He loves to feel strong, and to be a "free" thinker.

My father in law is also trash, he had a similar development.
In his youth he was a more of a lefty, into unionizing and workers rights.
Now he tries to be edgy with right wing speak and islamophobia.
( islamophobia is the go to flavor of racism in Germany)
The common thing is, he loves to be in the center of attention and always loved it.
( he is also a cheater, a shady businessman and a narcissist)

You're onto something with the whole center of attention thing. It's definitely a commonality I've notice in the really heavy pro-trump people on social media.

They often want to be relentless and krass, the cause is secondary.
Like a mercenary ( a word I just learned) who enjoys the violence and just goes to another army when the first war ends.
