Love that the contracts got renewed!
Love everyone on this show.

Karen and Rod were the best addition to KATG EVER.
And I’m standing by that, other people are good, K and R are podcast angels. ( this is not a secret insult. I didn’t say gods angels)

Our word for war is Krieg. Still short! When you love something you find a short one.
You have many german words and it's always the weirdest.
Like zeitgeist, sitzprobe or leitmotiv ( or leitmotif)

Great episode!

Just a side note for Keith: Hindu is a religion, not a language. It would be like saying the nurse or pharmacist or whomever administered the shots is Christian, so it was hard to understand him.

Hindi is a language, but there are hundreds of languages spoken in South Asia. I now just say South Asian if I can't figure it out

I'm here to add more nerdy info about words! This is an addition to what Apia said, but with a bent on what I find interesting as an American who once learned German. Specifically, words like "gesundheit." It always bugged me that translations of German into English didn't really make sense as a novice speaker. You learned words like "gesund" early on and they are adjectives. Since nobody else cares, I'll be quick. The suffix "-heit" in German is usually added to adjectives to make a noun which embodies the essence of the verb. So gesundheit is a noun that embodies the essence of being healthy. Does that make sense to modern English speakers? Not really, because we don't talk that way. That concept is why German ends up with words that are 40 letters long - you can put general words together in a big chain and it utimately describes something specific. "Schadenfreude" is another common one in English (a combination of a verb and a noun) and, as Apia mentioned, "zeitgeist" (a preposition and a noun).

It's basically the German version of how new English words get made. Modern English slang words are often shortening of general phrases or giving new purpose to other words. "Bussin" is derived from "busting a move" and "rizz" is taking the noun "charisma" and making it a verb.

I doubt anybody here is as fascinated by these as I am. Language is often described as having evolved but how it evolves is left out. This is how it evolves. And I'm a dork and think it's really cool.

I think Gesundheit is best translated in healthiness.

I like thinking about words, too. And I have a third language I speak on the same level ( polish) so it's extra fun, because you notice that you can only translate maybe 90%, the rest is interpretation.
The same words and expressions do not exist.

Since you speak German and English, you can probably get around pretty easily in the Netherlands, too, if you've never been. Dutch is...a weird mix of the two with a few very notable exceptions and some weird pronunciations (the letter g is more like the ch in Chemda mixed with an English g)

Also, Polish? That's crazy. That language is rough (although I tried to learn Finnish, and...yeah, no)

Also, also, welcome to KATG language corner!
