Yeah, that's new york for ya! People just put on their blinders and go into auto-pilot as they go to and from their destinations... although I do like the cop van driving by not giving a shit.

Of course, I bet if that wasn't a white guy and he was in different neighborhoods, the story might be different. Let's see a black guy try to take a hacksaw to a bike in the upper west side.

The fact that someone was standing there with a video camera probably gave people the idea that it wasn't for real. If the camera was hidden, they should have showed where.

I live in a crowed apartment complex in Wichita KS.

I have had three burglaries in 5 years all in early morning daylight hours, in plain view of my neighbors. Seven years ago, while I lived in an upscale neighborhood with my ex, my bicycle was stolen from my front porch on a Saturday afternoon.

I doubt that NYC is unique in its head-turning when it comes to property crime.

Anything not tied down with a massive deterrent will be stolen.

The best rule with bicycles:
All bikes weigh 40 pounds. A 15 lb bicycle must carry a 25 pound lock. 38lb bicycle a two pound lock, etc

Leave a massive lock in the locations where you leave your bicycle regularly rather than carry your lock with you. Ride a beater when going to unknown locations.
