nice tattoo, back to your first question about tipping. a tattoo artist like waiters get fucked over a lot, most only get 40% of the total cost of each tattoo that they do and they also have to pay the owner to rent their booth at the shop, long story short they don't make as much as you would think, so tipping is important and will put you on their "good" list (future discounted work, etc) if the work is done well and you are overall happy with the experience and the outcome 20% isn't much to ask.

Now that's a nice looking tat. It will look exquisite smashing down on a shattered metallic skull in the coming robot apocalypse.

Funny thing, my girlfriend and I just had a conversation last week about teachers (especially in the primary grades) getting tattoos. I am working towards my principalship qualification as we speak, so it's not like I don't have some kind of vested interest in this subject.

Honestly, at first, even though I am entirely liberal and progressive, I said that if anyone with a visible tattoo or uncommon piercing or too great an ammount of piercings were to apply for a teaching position, I wouldn't dream of hiring them. It's not that I disagree with tattooing and piercing, it's just that I feel that many parents have the belief that teachers should be seen as entirely professional workers and members of society. Really, anything a teacher wears or does is seen by students as socailly acceptable because we are in the ultimate position of authority in their small little world. In reality we ideally represent the physical manifestation of societies norms, values, and mores. Thats why teachers are always a hot topic at dinner parties, or any other social gathering... we are supposed to be the best of the best in order to pass on to their children the proper socialization they desire. So, when introducing tattoos and piercings into the picture, to many people that goes against the grain of social responsiblity that many parents believe we should have. It can be argued that since we are in such a position of power and authority, anything we do is seen by the children as being ok. We "set the example" for children from walking down the halls in a controlled manner, to using appropriate voice and language, to conflict resolution and whatever else. There is nothing to say that introducing questionable clothing, piercings, or tattoos do not present the same image to children. "Mom, my teacher has a really cool robot tattoo, I wanna get one too!" Imagine the dinner table discussion after that bomb is dropped at a more conservative household. Although I'm not included in this, I know many parents that would have a serious problem with a teacher who has a visible tattoo in the classroom.

I have a question for you... if I were to say "I have had a number of complaints from parents regarding your tattoo and lebret. They feel that it is not right to have their sons and daughters exposed to such body art modifications. They want the lebret removed and the tattoo completely covered up at all times." What would be your reaction? Do you feel that your actions (getting the body art in the first place) should be yours alone, and not open to discussion? Where do you draw the line with visible tattoos on teachers? You definately have an awareness that this could be a bit of a debatable topic, even if it's only for a day or two, as I saw in a later post of yours. I am just very curious because I know around my area, there are a lot of incredibly conservative families, and many of those would be outraged to hear that a kindergarten teacher of all things has a tattoo and visibly uncommon piercing.

Now, what if I were to say that I'd support you 100%. Saying that there is nothing present in any legislation regarding the display of tattoos and piercings.

And, what if I were to disregard your claims of personal freedom, and strongly suggest that you cover things up? What if the parents threatened to go to the superintendant or board level if I neglected their general claims?

Sorry about the long message. It helped me get out some of my ideas that I had never really solidified before. It's a bit of a stream-of-conciousness rant at times, but I'd love if you did reply with some thoughts. I'm really interested in what you have to say on this

Also, sorry if anything sounded like an attack, I can tell you that it wasn't meant to be! I just kind of wrote and didn't edit haha. Thanks.

Being a teacher (K-6 general music and choir) I was wondering the same thing. In college I had a streak of smurf blue hair at the base of my neck. In fact, a professor I spent much time with that first year I dyed it didn't notice for almost the entire school year. It was very discreet, but I knew it would have to go as soon as I graduated. I dyed the last part of it back right before student teaching.

I miss it dearly, but the area I teach is quite conservative. The school mascot is the Rebel (a Gen. Robert E. Lee looking man) and I have already gotten in trouble for saying Hell in a non-explitive manner. But then again, this area may not be as progressive as Fredericton.

As an aspiring teacher, and currently an after school site coordinator I have to agree about piercings and tattoos. One of the people that I have working with me has their tongue pierced, and I cringe every time she opens her mouth. Not that children should be sheltered from tattoos and piercings, I just don't think it should be in a school setting. I also think that if you're going to have a tattoo they should deal with and be covered by a shirt (a T-shirt).

I also have a question, there was a sign saying that you should tip your artist, i have no idea how much you should tip on a tattoo so i put in an extra 20 (it was 120 for my tattoo) is this about right? i really wasn't sure

Awesome Tat btw. But I never heard of tipping a tattoo artist as a compulsory thing. Although when I had mine I tipped anyway. In my opinion if someone if doing something ESPECIALLY for you, it's always good manners to tip that person. My opinion anyway. Now burn me for it... ... ... . still waiting for the burn.. . .. .
