I've read dune 1.5 times, but the Sci-fi police at my old school warned me harshly against the rest of the series and the movie.

Discworld (saga?) by Terry Pratchett. The books can be vary between awesome to okay, The Colour of Magic and The light fantastic are good.

You should watch the movie not because it is good, but because it's insane and worth watching from the train wreck perspective. At the least skim it and make sure to watch the scene where he teaches them the wierding way and the last scene.

I just read his other series, Alvin Maker, which was a good read. He creates a new kind of fantasy set in America instead of the same ol' elves and dwarves.

hmm...well I can't remember the full title but it begins and ends with a loud SLURP. You should enjoy those.

Dresden Files

Just because it can't be said enough, read the Dresden Files books. There is only one wizard named Harry worth reading about, and he lives in Chicago.

Also check out Bloodsucking Fiends, A Dirty Job, & You Suck by Christopher Moore.

Stephen King's Dark Tower series. DO IT. It's so worth it, especially if you've read his other work and your familiar with the crossover characters... it's such a massive tale.

One or two of the Dark Tower books are a good reading on their own, but as a series it is awful.

Stephen King gets bored in the middle and writes, "then the characters came over to my house for pizza, and I was like whoa, I made you up, you can't be here eating pizza for realz!" I wish I was making that up, I really do.

There is a huge discipline required to write a long series and all Stephen King did with the The Dark Tower series was prove he didn't have it.

Plus after 7 books, that ending was so weak... I'll even give it away. Nothing happens.

By Charlie Huston:

Hank Thompson trilogy
Caught Stealing (2004)
Six Bad Things (2005)
A Dangerous Man (2006)

I *HIGHLY HIGHLY* recommend it.

Dune and a few parts of Dune Messiah are really really good, but holy shit that series takes a nosedive after that. I own all the Dune books, but I cannot get through Children of Dune. And even that is better than the abortions his son is putting out. Whichever book I read from him was one of the worst pieces of garbage I've ever read.
